Water Shortage Warning for Miami-Dade County
Published on February 17, 2026
The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) has issued a Water Shortage Warning for several counties in South Florida, including Miami-Dade. Dry conditions and increased water use have lowered water levels in the Biscayne Aquifer — the main source of our drinking water.
While there are no mandatory restrictions at this time, residents are encouraged to conserve water wherever possible. Even small changes can help stabilize aquifer levels and prevent stricter measures in the future.
Miami-Dade’s Water and Sewer Department (WASD) continues to provide essential water services to about 2.8 million residents every day and is carefully monitoring wells, treatment plants, and system operations.
Simple Ways to Save Water
Conserving water doesn’t have to be complicated — small changes add up fast. Here’s what you can do:
- Hold off on watering your lawn until the warning is lifted. Outdoor irrigation uses the most water at home.
- Check your landscape with irrigation evaluations and take advantage of available rebates.
- Skip washing cars or boats and delay filling pools.
- Run dishwashers and laundry only when full.
- Shift water use to off-peak hours, usually early morning or evening.
- Upgrade your fixtures — rebates of up to $200 are available for high-efficiency toilets, faucets, and showerheads.
- Look for leaks with a quick indoor or outdoor water audit.
Even small adjustments help protect the Biscayne Aquifer, our main source of drinking water, and prevent stricter measures down the road. For more tips and rebate info, visit the [www.miamidade.gov/water]Miami-Dade WASD website.
