Don't Wait For a Storm Watch to Start Prepping

Doral Has You Covered.
Hurricane season officially kicks off June 1st, and if you're a South Florida local, you already know the drill: check your shutters, stock your pantry, and hope for the best. But being truly prepared goes a little deeper than a few extra water jugs — and this year, the City of Doral is making it easier than ever to get storm-ready before the season even starts. On Saturday, May 16th, the City is hosting the Doral Social Market: Hurricane Readiness Edition at Doral Central Park (3005 NW 92nd Avenue) from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM — think live music, local vendors, great food, and family-friendly fun with interactive stations and expert resources woven throughout. Come for the vibes, leave storm-ready. But first, let's talk prep.
Build your emergency kit before you need it. The biggest mistake people make is waiting until a storm is in the forecast to stock up. By then, store shelves are cleared out and the anxiety is already at a ten. Aim to have at least 72 hours' worth of supplies on hand — water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, a flashlight, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, any prescription medications, and important documents stored in a waterproof container. If you have pets, don't forget supplies for them too.
Know your zone. Not all flooding risks are created equal in Miami-Dade. Look up your evacuation zone at miamidade.gov and know your nearest shelter ahead of time. Having a plan before the storm is named takes a massive amount of stress off when the time actually comes.
Charge everything and back up your files. Keep a portable power bank charged and ready. Back up important documents — insurance policies, IDs, medical records — either in the cloud or on a USB drive kept with your kit. When the power goes out, you'll be glad you did.
Check in on your neighbors. Preparedness isn't just personal — it's communal. Check in on elderly neighbors, families with young kids, or anyone who might need extra help securing their home or getting out safely. That's the Doral spirit.
The May 16th market is designed to take all of the above and make it genuinely enjoyable — stroll through local vendors, grab a bite, listen to live music, and stop by the interactive stations where experts will walk you through exactly what you need to build a solid emergency kit. It's the kind of event where you bring the whole family, have a great Saturday evening, and walk away actually feeling prepared, not stressed. Hurricane season waits for no one, but a little preparation — and a good time — goes a long way. See you at the park.
