Vote to Make Downtown Doral Charter Upper School National Winner!

We're proud to have one of our great schools, Downtown Doral Charter Upper School, representing the City as a national finalist of the "Samsung Solve for Tomorrow" competition.

The City of Doral Public Works Department had the privilege of collaborating with the school earlier this year for their conceptual project in which the students designed a wireless device/system to aid in detecting debris and obstruction in drains to prevent potential clogging and eventual flooding. The student's goal was to apply STEM practices to approach this community challenge. Watch their video to learn more about the project and VOTE to help them win:  Vote Now!

STEM focuses on the simultaneous collaboration among the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to design and apply a solution to a problem. Devices placed in stormwater drains would determine the quantity of debris or sedimentation present in them and would then send the information to a common network in the Public Works Department. Using this wireless system, the department can pin-point drains that could potentially become obstructed in a fast and cost effective manner since human force will no longer be required for direct supervision of debris in stormwater drains.

The City has participated in providing input about the City’s stormwater system and the possible implementation of the project. City staff has worked with the students to inform them on our functions in relation to how we preserve the stormwater system and overall City Right-of-Way in order to maintain safe roadways and provide our community with the best quality of life possible. We continue to assist the students by providing guidance and information as needed in order to bring their project to fruition and hopefully watch them win the national portion of the contest!
