 Property Release Form

Property & Evidence Unit

The City of Doral Police Department is responsible for the control and storage of property collected by Department employees in a manner which will safeguard the property in its original condition as nearly as possible. The Department also maintain complete records of the security and subsequent disposition of the property. This system is designed to ensure continuity and consistency in the safekeeping of property in order to meet the requirements of the judicial system. The Property and Evidence (P&E) Specialist receives, catalogs, and stores evidentiary, abandoned, forfeited and found property in accordance with state and local law.

Lost & Found Property

Items that have been found and turned into the City of Doral Police Department, either by an officer or by a good Samaritan, are all inspected by our Property and Evidence Unit. If applicable, our (P&E) Specialist generates and mails a letter to the owner explaining that we have their personal property. Found items will be held for 90 days, any items that go unclaimed is subject for disposal.

Evidence

Items that are seized as Evidence is governed by special conditions. Per Florida statute 925.11 and 925.12, if the suspect in a felony case is found guilty by jury or if they plead in court, the property must be held until the sentence has been fully served, regardless of who owns the property.

If your court case was "Acquitted" of all charges, the arresting or impounding officer must complete a Property Disposition form, indicating that your property can be released. If you are not sure if a Property Disposition form have been completed, please complete and submit the Property Release Form to the Property and Evidence Unit.

Guns

All persons retrieving a firearm are subject to a background check for prior felony convictions. Firearms may not be released to a convicted felon. If there is any question about the adjudication of a charge(s), the weapon will not be released until the issue is resolved. Release of firearms that are involved in a Breach of Peace case, requires a certified copy of a Return of Property court order. There are no exceptions.

Examples of Breach of Peace cases:

  • Domestic disputes, batteries or injunctions.
  • Reckless display of a firearm.
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (weapons will not be released).
  • Baker Act
  • Risk protection order
