First Wave of Computers Land at Dr. Rolando K. Espinosa K-8 center

Doral, FL – On January 13th, the first batch of computers arrived at the Dr. Rolando K. Espinosa K-8 Center to start their second careers.  These civil servant CPUs were refurbished as part of an agreement established between the City of Doral and a non-for profit organization, the South Florida Digital Alliance (SFDA). The agreement will allow the City’s schools to benefit from what would have otherwise become surplus computer equipment. Going forward, the SFDA will take in the computers that the City of Doral donates, refurbish them, and redistribute these to any Doral school that has placed a request with the organization.

“It’s a great that the first batch of computers arrived at the Dr. Rolando Espinosa K-8 Center since it was their PTA members who approached my office to discuss the school’s computer needs. The City Council unanimously approved the Resolution in December, and with the assistance of the SFDA, a steady influx of computers will now occur between the City and our local schools. That means that during this fiscal year alone, our local schools will receive an additional 90 computers from the City of Doral,” explained Vice Mayor Christi Fraga.

James Osteen Jr., Executive Director of the SFDA said, “There’s plenty of life in these machines, especially for new users. We should be in a position to provide additional machines shortly, but we are in the process assembling complete packages.”

The SFDA was incorporated in 2009 under the name of the Miami-Dade Broadband Coalition through a generous grant provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The SFDA collaborates with local organizations to implement programs such as the one that it has established with the City of Doral in order to help spread affordable technology throughout communities.
